Coonawarra Cabernet Across Canada
Armed with some very special bottles, Wynns Coonawarra Estate Chief Winemaker, Sue Hodder, recently traveled to Canada for a series of tasting events celebrating the 50th anniversary of Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. In just one week, Sue hosted nine events for media, sommeliers and avid consumers in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal in addition to sharing her passion with Canada's local sales team.
The two headline events consisted of a vertical tasting of twenty-four vintages of Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet spanning fifty years offered attendees a taste of Coonawarra history. Southcorp's Wine Educator Matthew Lane introduced Sue Hodder and provided additional tasting insight, while video presentations on large screens brought the terra rossa, Coonawarra and Wynns Coonawarra Estate to life.Canadian wine journalist Anthony Gismondi was impressed by the quality and longevity of many of the vintages and noted "It turned out to be a remarkable tasting with some standouts including a still fruity 1958; a terrific 1960 which offered up the Bordelais elegance and silky structure Coonawarra cab is known for and perhaps the best of the early lot, a sweet, minty supple 1966." He described Black Label Cabernet as "Always solid" which echoes a growing consumer following of this wine in Canada.
In eastern Canada, Sue also had the opportunity to share older vintages of Wynns Coonawarra Estate Shiraz, including the 1967 that showed coffee and caramel notes with attractive palate sweetness - testament to the endurance of another fabulous wine from Wynns Coonawarra Estate.Return to our latest news page.
